Ready to get behind the microphone? This guide will show you how to connect your live broadcasting software (encoder) to the CastHost servers so you can start streaming to your audience in real-time.
Step 1: Get Your Credentials
You need four pieces of information from your dashboard to connect:
- Server Address: (e.g., s1.casthost.net)
- Port: (Usually your Source Port)
- Password: (Your Source Password)
- Mount Point: (Usually
/stream)
Where to find these: Log in to your Dashboard and look for the Station Details panel.
Step 2: Configure Your Software
Open your preferred encoder and enter the details from Step 1. Most software will ask for a "Server Type"—always select Icecast v2 (recommended) or Shoutcast depending on your plan.
- BUTT: Settings -> Main -> Add Server
- Mixxx: Preferences -> Live Broadcasting
- SAM Broadcaster: Encoders window -> Plus (+) icon
Step 3: Set Your Audio Quality
To ensure a stable stream, your "Bitrate" should match your CastHost plan (e.g., 128kbps). If your internet upload speed is slow, consider dropping your bitrate to 96kbps to prevent buffering for your listeners.
Step 4: Go Live!
Click the Play or Connect button in your software. If successful, your software will display a "Timer" or a "Streaming" status.
Step 5: Verify Your Broadcast
Go back to your CastHost Dashboard. The Station Information panel should now show the Artist and Title of the song you are currently playing from your computer. If it does, you are officially on the air!
