Glossary of Radio Broadcasting Terms

Plain-language definitions of the radio and streaming terms you will see around the CastHost dashboard.

AutoDJ

Server-based automatic playback. AutoDJ plays the tracks and playlists you've uploaded so your station keeps streaming around the clock without anyone broadcasting live.

Scheduling Tool

The planner that sets when each playlist airs, so AutoDJ runs different content by time of day, all hands-off.

Playlist

A named group of uploaded tracks that AutoDJ plays in order or shuffled.

Jingle

A short audio clip such as a station ID, sweeper, or ad spot that AutoDJ drops between tracks at the interval you set.

DJ / Streamer Account

A login you create for a live presenter so they can connect their own broadcasting software and take over the stream.

Encoder

The software or hardware that captures your live audio, compresses it, and sends it to your stream.

Web Encoder (WebDJ)

Broadcast live straight from your web browser, with no software to install.

Connection / Encoder Details

The settings your encoder needs to connect to your stream: Server Host, DJ Encoder Port, Mount/Stream ID, Source Username, and Source Password.

Server Type

The streaming protocol your station runs on, shown as a read-only value on your Encoders page and Dashboard. It tells your encoder which connection method to use.

Source Password

The password your encoder uses to connect and broadcast to your stream.

Mount Point

The path on your stream that listeners connect to (for example, /). A station can have more than one mount point to offer different bitrates or formats.

Relay

A connection that rebroadcasts another stream through your station, or pushes your stream to a remote server.

Bitrate

How much audio data your stream sends each second, measured in kilobits per second (kbps). Higher bitrates mean better sound but use more bandwidth and listener slots.

Bandwidth

The total amount of data your stream sends to all listeners over time. More listeners and higher bitrates use more bandwidth.

Audio Format

The codec your stream is encoded in, such as MP3, AAC+, OGG Vorbis, OGG Opus, or FLAC.

Listener Slot

One concurrent listener connection. Your plan includes a maximum number of slots.

Now Playing

The track currently airing on your stream.

Statistics

Your audience data: who's listening now and how your station performs over time.

Total Listening Hours (TLH)

The combined listening time of all sessions over a chosen date range. A core measure of how much your audience actually tunes in.

Widget

An embeddable piece of your station you can paste into a website.

Stream Details & Player

The main embeddable player widget for your site.

Custom Web Player

A branded player you can style with your own title, slogan, side image, and colors, then embed on your site.

Song Request Form

An embeddable form that lets listeners request tracks or send dedications.

Setup Wizard

The guided onboarding that walks you through your first setup steps.

Basic / Advanced Mode

A display setting that controls how much you see. Basic mode keeps things simple; Advanced mode reveals extra controls like Mount Points and Relaying.

Page Builder

The drag-and-drop editor for the free website that comes with your station.

Store

The e-commerce area where you sell physical goods, digital downloads, or paywalled subscriptions to your audience.

Social Media [BETA]

Tools to manage your station's social accounts from one place.

Mobile App

A branded listening app for your station, available as a paid add-on.

MCP / AI Integration [BETA]

Connect AI assistants to your station so they can read and help manage it through a secure endpoint.

Storage Quota

The space your account uses for radio media, store files, social media, and your website.
