Broadcasting live is the most exciting part of running a radio station. Whether you are a professional DJ using SAM Broadcaster or a hobbyist using the free BUTT encoder, this guide will help you connect your software to the CastHost servers perfectly.
1. Understanding Connection Modes
Before opening your software, check your Dashboard to see if the AutoDJ is running.
- If AutoDJ is ENABLED: You must connect using a DJ Account (Username + Password) on the dedicated DJ Port. The AutoDJ will automatically fade out when you connect and resume when you disconnect.
- If AutoDJ is DISABLED: You must use the Source Password on the Main Source Port.
Note: If you try to use Source credentials while AutoDJ is enabled, your connection will be rejected.
2. Where to Find Your Credentials
Log in to your Dashboard and look for the Station Details or Encoders panel. You will need to copy the following:
- Server Hostname/Address: (e.g., s1.casthost.net)
- Port: (DJ Port or Source Port)
- Username & Password: (Your DJ credentials or Source password)
- Mount Name: (Usually
/stream)
3. Configuring Popular Encoder Software
SAM Broadcaster
- Click the + icon in the Encoders window to add a new encoder.
- Select MP3 (LAME) or AAC as the format.
- In "Server Details," select Icecast (recommended) or Shoutcast based on your plan.
- Enter your Host, Port, and Password. Click OK and press "Play" to start.
BUTT (Broadcast Using This Tool) - Free & Recommended
- Download and open BUTT. Click Settings.
- Under the "Main" tab, click Add under Server.
- Enter a Name (e.g., CastHost), then input your Host, Port, and Password.
- Select Icecast or Shoutcast as the Type.
- Click Save, then click the Play button on the main BUTT window to go live.
Mixxx & VirtualDJ
- In your software settings, navigate to Live Broadcasting.
- Input your CastHost credentials into the respective fields.
- Ensure your Bitrate (e.g., 128kbps) matches your plan's maximum to avoid connection drops.
4. Using the Built-in WebDJ (No Software Required)
Don't want to install software? You can broadcast directly from your Chrome or Firefox browser:
- Navigate to DJ -> Web Encoder in your dashboard.
- Enter your DJ Username and Password.
- Grant the browser permission to use your Microphone.
- Click Start Streaming. You can now mix music and talk live directly from the dashboard!
5. Troubleshooting Connection Issues
- "Connection Refused": Usually means you are using the wrong port. Check if AutoDJ is on/off and switch ports accordingly.
- "Invalid Password": Double-check for extra spaces when copying and pasting your password.
- Audio Stuttering: Your upload speed may be too low for your chosen bitrate. Try lowering your encoder to 96kbps or 128kbps.
